What Your Public IP Reveals
Learn what a public IP address can reveal about your network—and what it cannot reliably identify.
What a Public IP Is
A public IP is the internet-facing address used by your connection or gateway. It can be associated with an ISP, autonomous system, approximate region, and routing information.
What an IP Lookup Can Estimate
Lookup databases may return country, region, city, postal area, timezone, ISP, organization, ASN, or network block. Availability and accuracy vary by provider.
What It Cannot Prove
An IP lookup does not prove a person’s identity, exact street address, exact device location, or who was using a connection at a specific moment.
Why the Location Can Look Wrong
Mobile carriers, VPNs, corporate gateways, CGNAT, ISP routing, and stale geolocation databases can make the reported location differ from the device’s actual location.
How to Use the Result
Use IP data for network context, troubleshooting, routing checks, and privacy awareness. Treat location as approximate unless you have a separate authoritative source.
