TROUBLESHOOTING PATH

From “It Feels Slow” to a Useful Diagnosis

1

Measure

Run the speed test and note download performance and ping.

2

Identify

Check public IP, ISP, ASN and approximate network location.

3

Inspect

Use hostname, security and WebRTC tools if the issue looks network-specific.

4

Repeat

Compare results over time before blaming one device, ISP or route.

QUICK REFERENCE

What Changes a Browser Speed Result?

WiFi signal, background downloads, device load, test-server distance, congestion and browser conditions can all change a measurement.

  • Use Ethernet when you need to isolate WiFi.
  • Pause large downloads and cloud backups.
  • Run more than one test at different times.
  • Compare ping as well as headline Mbps.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Guide Questions

Why can two speed tests give different results?

Network congestion, route selection, test endpoint, WiFi conditions, browser load and active background traffic can all change the measured result.

Does an IP lookup show an exact address?

No. IP geolocation is approximate network context. It should not be treated as proof of a precise home or device location.

Can SpeedMeter tell whether a VPN is working?

SpeedMeter can compare your detected public IP before and after you connect a VPN or proxy, and it can inspect browser-visible WebRTC candidates.
